Buz Popz - Part 2 PDF Print E-mail

We’ve been inundated in the last month with celebs popping up in dance offs and mountain climbs, encouraging others to ‘do something funny for money’ in aid of Comic Relief. So, we jumped on the bandwagon and set about buying hundreds of red balloons and big knickers in order to do our bit.

We chose Jack Rabbit Slims in Hoylake to stage our event but by the time the doors opened at 7.30pm we braced ourselves for a night of red faces rather than red noses. The hoards of people that we’d hoped for were enjoying Davina in the comfort of their own homes instead of picking their noses with us Buzettes. We each watched the door, feeling like the kid in school that nobody will sit next to, hoping that a coach load of stags or hens were just around the corner. Every tick of the clock reverberated around the empty dancefloor, the unpopped balloons sitting lonely and sad on stage.

Then another blow came down upon our carefully constructed schedule. Laura, our model and Buzpopz girl (who volunteered to wear just a bikini with balloons on top which would be popped for a donation) was stuck in Coventry!

We Buzettes are gutsy but the line had to be drawn somewhere and that line for each of us was exposing our bare bums to a crowd. 8 o’clock came and went with our only friends being the balloons and our plans being the only thing to be popped and deflated. What could we do? Pack up and head home? No chance! It was time for the Buzettes to fight back.

With clenched fists Donna took our helpers Kayla and Conner outside to brave the cold night air and stampeded the streets on a Buz mission. Walls, bus stops, cars, lamp posts, shop windows were pasted with our fliers and people were then quickly pointed into a new direction for their night out! And then it happened… A person we didn’t know. Hurray! I’m surprised they didn’t turn and run the opposite way with the ten eager faces peering expectantly at them as they walked in to the bar. And again 2, 4, 6, 8 people and before we know it the curse of Friday 13th slowly lifts and the sound of chatter drowns out the ticking clock. The crowds kept coming and the games began.

Trunk Monkeys front man Georgie did a sterling job at compering our first game and started the ball rolling for our Comic Relief pot. Raffle prizes ranged from tins of meatballs to the more sought-after Grand National tickets and an overnight stay in the executive suite of the Dibbinsdale Hotel. Everyone who walked through the door dug deep and happily contributed to the fantastic cause.

Buz favourite Danny Morris (former Eton Road singer) took time out of rehearsals for his Overload Tour to treat the crowd to three tracks from his new album and stuck around afterwards to draw some prizes. If you liked what you saw, he will be back on home soil next month performing at The Adelphi Hotel on 9th May and St George’s Hall on 17th so don’t miss out. Even sandwiched between masses of instruments balloons and raffle prizes he managed to belt out his new hits.

Our final game was the original buzpopz which saw our army stud Philip and Laura’s brave stand-in Kelsey covered from head to toe in balloons which were each popped for a fee which went straight in to the donation bucket. Not only is it courageous to get up on stage half naked but to remain stock still while the balloons burst again bare flesh is heroic! Soul Patrol took the baton from this point on and provided classics for the duration of the night to the heaving dance floor.

Despite the knotted stomachs, tantrums and stress the night was a roaring success with hundreds being raised towards the Red Nose appeal in just a matter of hours. And we weren’t the only ones who went red nose crazy… Razzle Dazzle fancy dress shop in New Brighton invited customers to dress up funny for money in one of their many outfits and provided a framed snap from skylight photographer Brian Kenny. They tallied a total of £75 for their efforts throughout the day while Seven Waves coloured the Lord Mayors beard at 9am Friday morning as a prelude to their full day of fundraising. With a ‘gig-a -thon’ all over the Wirral and auctions on their radio station for the duration of the day their grand total currently stands at over £1600.

Despite the recession it was heartening that people forgot their own financial worries for one night and got involved with helping a greater cause. A big thank you for all the support of those who dipped their hands in to their pockets including the businesses who generously provided our great list of prizes.

Also a big Buz thanks goes to Adam and staff at Jack Rabbit Slims who allowed us to use and abuse their venue and Georgie for stepping up to the plate at the eleventh hour.
