Located in the heart of Heswall with views of the notorious Liverpool skyline and the serene hills of North Wales, the Jug & Bottle is the ideal place to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. Now stretching beyond twenty years the pub and restaurant is intent on ‘doing the simple things well’ and solidifying it’s reputation as a peoples pub.New manager Carl Davies and long standing Assistant Gary Byrne believe it’s the personal touch which makes it a firm favourite with all who visit. ‘Nothing is too much trouble and the fact that all our food is prepared from scratch means that we can cater completely for special needs.’ From vegetarians and vegans to the smaller appetite, the ingredients mean that there is a meal choice for everyone. It’s this sense of going the extra mile that appeals about the friendly country pub. With the larger chains offering a rigid menu, it’s refreshing to feel that this is a place that cares about you enjoying your grub instead of worrying about the stock being five pence down on peas! The price is one you can’t possibly argue with, thanks to the two courses for £10.95 (Tue-Fri) currently running alongside the a la carte menu (6-10pm). In addition to the impressive restaurant on site the guest rooms above mean that after once you’ve stuffed yourself to the point of refusing to move, you only need to stumble up a flight of stairs and it’s bedtime. Rooms are a big hit for those with weddings close by as £65 can bag you a double room including a full breakfast in the morning. The hotel has also played host to full wedding parties being block booked to families and friends wishing to sleep under the same roof. The bar prides itself on camaraderie and a laid back charm which gives visitors the desire to return. ‘Everyone who comes seems to find their way back here,’ claims Gary, ‘I started as a glass collector in 2000 and here I am now nine years on.’ Manager Carl has also gravitated back to the cosy pub after a spell of running restaurants and bars in Chester. Currently in a period of transition, the cosy Wirral institution has exciting menu changes up its sleeve but the managers are staying tight-lipped. ‘It’s a very exciting time, we have plenty of ideas that will be taking place in the next few months but you will have to wait and see.’ The Jug and Bottle is a treasure that strikes an ideal balance between the traditional and contemporary. The décor oozes rustic character while the forward thinking managers are staying one step ahead of the credit crunch with reasons to keep existing custom and bring in fresh faces. The bar boasts a little something for everyone. The younger gaggle enjoy the house shots of Jagermeister while the Sky Sports mean the men are happy to stick around the entire weekend. The sophistication of the restaurant and idyllic surrounding means it scores brownie points with the ladies and the extensive wine list and live music every Wednesday and Friday add to the positives. The Place to B for a night to remember.
